Dental Implant Surgery in Prosthodontics

Posted on 1/9/2023 by Dr. David Wanserski
Dental Implant Surgery in ProsthodonticsDental implant surgery in prosthodontics is installing a dental implant into the bone and then attaching a replacement tooth or teeth to it. This can be done to replace one tooth or multiple teeth. An oral surgeon usually performs the procedure, but prosthodontists may also perform these procedures. During the process, several operations are involved.

Operations Carried Out by Prosthodontists During a Dental Implant Surgery

Below are some of the most common operations carried out by prosthodontists during a dental implant surgery:

Removal of Damaged Tooth

A damaged tooth will be removed before the prosthodontist places the implant in its place. This helps in avoiding damage to other healthy teeth during the procedure.

Grafting to Prepare the Jawbone

The jawbone is prepared by grafting it with bone particles or synthetic materials. This helps in creating a suitable environment for implanting an artificial root.

Bone Augmentation

Dental implants must be placed in a bone bed that is dense, healthy, and large enough to hold the implant. If the bone is weak or not present, it must be augmented with graft materials to provide a stable foundation for the implant.

Implant Replacement

Dental implants are placed into the prepared area of the jawbone using surgical tools. After placing an implant, a screw is inserted from above and then tightened with a special tool called a torque driver. This process ensures that the implant stays stable and does not loosen up over time.

Why Is Prosthodontic Dental Implant Surgery Helpful?

Prosthodontic dental implant surgery can help improve your overall oral health and appearance by replacing missing teeth with artificial ones that look and feel like the real thing. These artificial teeth are made from titanium or porcelain material, which allows them to be custom-fitted to your mouth and jaw structure. Also, they help alleviate pain and discomfort in your mouth, giving you oral health. Let us help you with your implant surgery discussions when you come to see us.
