As the name suggests, no-prep veneers are a type of dental veneers that do not require tooth preparation to fit them. They are considered a less-invasive option to the traditional veneers and also require less time to mount. Instead of the dentists removing the enamel and a session of the underneath tissue, they only get a small part of the enamel shaved down. Additionally, local anesthesia may not be required because the procedure isn't very invasive and no tooth shaving is required. A patient receiving no prep veneers means that they will not need to get home with a provisional or temporary set of veneers.
Are You a Candidate?
Not every patient can receive no-prep veneers. Unless your teeth are small, then you might have a smile that looks thicker with traditional veneers. The smile also appears bulky without preparation. Further, if a tooth has a portion that sticks or is crooked, then it might need trimming back to have beautiful results after mounting the veneers to it. The translucent appearance of these veneers makes them inappropriate for people with dark staining on their teeth or visible damage.
Receiving No-Prep Veneers
These veneers are very thin, yet strong. They are given names like Lumineers, Vivaneers, or DURAthin, and their thickness is about 0.03mm while that of normal veneers is about 0.3mm. An important aspect of no-prep veneers is that they can be removed in order to reverse the procedure in case you want that. Like traditional veneers, no-prep veneers are fabricated in a lab. During the second appointment, your tooth is etched to see that the veneers adhere properly. Ensuring proper care can allow your no-prep veneers to last about 20 years.
