How Do I Take Care of My Dental Crowns?

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Brush your crowns twice a day. Employ fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Gently clean all surfaces of your teeth, including the area where the dental crowns meet the gumline. Take your time to ensure thorough cleaning.

Floss Daily

Employ interdental cleaners or dental floss to clean between your teeth, including around the dental crowns. This helps to get rid of plaque and food particles that may accumulate and cause gum irritation or decay.

Rinse with Mouthwash

After you brush and floss your teeth, use an antimicrobial mouthwash to rinse your mouth. This helps reduce bacteria and maintain fresh breath.

Avoid Hard or Sticky Foods

Be cautious when eating hard foods, such as hard candies, nuts, or popcorn kernels, as they can damage or dislodge your dental crowns. Sticky or chewy foods, like caramel, taffy, or chewing gum, can pull on your dental crowns and increase the risk of loosening them. Also, do not chew ice cubes since they can force your dental crowns excessively, leading to fractures or dislodgement.

Wear a Mouthguard

Wear a mouthguard to safeguard your crowns if you clench or grind your teeth. You may also talk to your dentist to provide alternative ways to protect your crowns from excessive force.

Avoid Using Teeth as Tools

Do not use your teeth to open packages, tear tape, or bite into non-food items. Using your teeth as tools can damage the dental crowns and compromise their stability.

Schedule Routine Dental Check-ups

Visit your dentist for routine dental check-ups and cleanings. During these visits, your dentist can examine your crowns, assess their condition, and address any concerns.
