What is the Best Adhesive for Dentures?

Posted on 2/22/2021 by Dr. David Wanserski
What is the Best Adhesive for Dentures? Most patients looking for tooth replacement options consider dentures as a viable option. They cost less than many other options available and are noninvasive. While some people worry about dentures slipping out of place and the messy adhesives, there are things to consider. As with everything, there are some adhesives that work better than others. So, which are the best ones? What should patients know about choosing the best ones?

What is Denture Adhesive?

For the denture wearer, denture adhesive can seem a little like magic. They hold the denture in place so they will not slip while eating, chewing, or speaking. It can come in different forms all of which serve the same purpose to hold the dentures against the gums. Some adhesives come in a paste or powder and in some cases strips. They are water-based and placed between the dentures and gums. The natural force that exists when dentures are placed is simply magnified by the adhesive.

Benefits of Denture Adhesive

The benefits of using adhesive are that it stops the dentures from moving and helps to keep food debris from beneath the denture so there is no chance of irritation. It also helps the dentures fit more securely. It helps to keep the patient's breath fresh with antibacterial components designed to help with that. It helps to instill a sense of confidence because, with no worries about the dentures shifting or moving, they can talk and smile and eat without anxiety.

While the adhesives have great benefits there are times where it is not recommended to use them. When dentures do not fit correctly it is not recommended to use more adhesive because it can have an adverse effect on oral cavity health. When patients have an allergic reaction of any kind, they should not use denture adhesives. If there are any cuts or open wounds in the mouth, patients should stop using adhesive. If you are having issues with your dentures, we can address them at your next visit to our office.
