Are You A Candidate for Dental Sedation?

Posted on 3/22/2021 by Dr. David Wanserski
Are You A Candidate for Dental Sedation?Do you get nervous every time you have to visit the dentist? You're not alone, as research indicates that more than 40 million Americans dread going to the dentist. The fear and anxiety of visiting the dentist come mainly due to people being uneasy with sitting in the dentist chair with their mouth open. However, you won't feel anxious about your next visit to the dentist with modern dental sedation.

People who are nervous or squeamish about sitting in the dentist's chair can relax knowing that they can be sedated so that the dentist may go about their job. But are you a good candidate for dental sedation? That is something we will discuss in detail in this post.

How Dental Sedation Works?

There are two types of sedation techniques used by dentists to calm patients: oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide. We will discuss both types of sedation to give you a better understanding. Nitrous oxide is a tasteless, odorless, and colorless gas that calms down patients during their dental appointment. A mask is used to administer nitrous oxide, and the gas will relax patients and allow them to move during their dental procedure. It won't put you to sleep and wears off quickly, so you can go about your day after your appointment.

Oral conscious sedation is administered in pill form and is meant to be taken one hour before the dental procedure begins. It produces light sedation, and you will remain conscious through the dental procedure. It is ideal for patients who suffer from anxiety during their dental checkups. The effects of this type of sedation are long-lasting, and you should have someone drive you to and from the dental office if you have been sedated in your appointment.
