What Are the Three Main Types of Dental Bridges?

What Are the Three Main Types of Dental Bridges? When you are planning to replace your missing teeth, there are different options that are available to you. One of them is dental bridges. Dental bridges are frequently used as prosthetics for replacing missing teeth as they are quite affordable and do not require an elaborate procedure. There are different types of dental bridges, and they are effective for different patients and their needs. This article explains them in detail.

Traditional Dental Bridges

Still the most popular type of dental bridges, our professionals use traditional bridges when a patient still has healthy natural bones around the missing tooth or teeth. Traditional bridges have a filler tooth called the pontic tooth and get support from crowns. These crowns sit over the healthy surrounding teeth which acts as abutment to hold the bridge firmly in place. When you get a traditional dental bridge, the natural teeth beside the empty space will get a reshape, so that the crowns will fit on them without creating discomfort.

Cantilever Dental Bridges

A cantilever bridge is best for patients who have no natural teeth on one side of the missing teeth. This way, only one abutment tooth supports the replacement tooth. While cantilever bridges are very efficient, they are not advisable for replacements located at the back of the mouth as they can cause a strain on the support tooth.

Maryland Bonded Bridges

Maryland bridges are also known as resin-bonded bridges. They are suitable for replacing teeth that are at the front of the mouth. Maryland bridges employ metallic or porcelain bands to secure a pontic (replacement) tooth to the back of the supporting teeth. With Maryland bridges, patients do not have to get their adjacent teeth reshaped. While Maryland bridges are not suitable for places with much biting or chewing force, they provide an esthetic finish.

While these are the main types, other types of dental bridges are composite bridges and implant supported bridges. Contact our professionals today to help you select the right one for your tooth replacement.
