Crown Materials & Placement

An example of a dental crown, it's material & placement at Wanserski Dental Center for Complex Dentistry in Wausau, WIDental crowns are one solution to bringing back the look and function of a damaged tooth. The crown, or cap, fits over the damaged tooth, covering the visible parts. They are used to protect a weakened tooth, to restore a cracked or broken tooth, to support a filled tooth, attach a dental bridge, to cover a badly shaped or discolored tooth, or to cover a dental implant. We invite you to visit our office at Wanserski Dental Center for Complex Dentistry to learn more about the effectiveness of dental crowns.

Crown Materials

Crowns are a permanent solution and can be made in a variety of materials. Metal crowns are very strong and rarely chip or break. They do not easily wear down and require just a small portion of the natural tooth be removed. Metal crowns can be of gold, nickel, chromium, or palladium. A significant drawback, however, is that the metal can be seen, making them a good choice for back molars.

Porcelain fused to metal crowns are color matched to the teeth alongside the crown, meaning they look more natural. They are proven to be effective, having been around for the past 50 years. One drawback is that there may be a dark line at the gumline as the metal under the porcelain may show through. The porcelain part of the crown may chip or break off. Aside from that, porcelain fused to metal crowns are good for either front or back teeth.

All resin crowns will wear down over time. While they are less expensive than other types of dental crowns, they are more likely to break than most.
All porcelain or all ceramic crowns are currently the most popular. They are best at matching the color of natural teeth and are a necessity for those with metal allergies. While they are not as strong as metal based crowns, they are an excellent choice for front teeth. They can last a long time but must be cared for properly.

A relatively new, but increasingly popular, material for dental crowns is zirconium. It provides the strength of metal and the natural look of porcelain. There is less chance of chipping or breaking and is metal free. The only real disadvantage is that zirconia can be somewhat difficult to adjust.

Dental Crown Placement

Overall, the process for placing a crown is pretty much the same. What may be different, is the treatment prior to dental crown preparation. When the tooth is prepped and ready, the dentist will take an impression of it, so the crown exactly fits the shape of your tooth. At this point, the temporary crown is placed over the tooth to protect it until the permanent crown is ready. The dentist sends the impression to a lab, where the permanent crown is created. At your second appointment, a couple of weeks after the initial preparation, the temporary crown is taken off and the permanent one put in place.

A dental crown is a long-lasting solution to a dental problem. Crowns can last up to 15 years with proper oral hygiene. Because you will have it for many years, you will want to have your crown placed by an experienced, skilled professional.
