Fixed Dentures
Wausau, WI

Having missing teeth does not just negatively impact your self-esteem, however; missing teeth can lead to a list of complications, including gum shrinkage, bone loss, and difficulty being able to bite or chew anymore. When we meet a patient in our exam chair who has lost some or all of their teeth, we here at Wanserski Dental Center for Complex Dentistry like to introduce them to fixed dentures to improve both their confidence and their quality of life.

What are Fixed Dentures and How Can They Benefit Me?

Conventional dentures have a bad rap, and unfortunately, most of the rumors about them are true. While they remain a popular choice for replacing missing teeth, that does not automatically mean they are necessarily the best choice for you. The advantage of conventional dentures over fixed dentures are limited, but their main claim to fame is that they do not require surgery to place and they have been around for centuries. When compared to fixed dentures, though, they pale in comparison.

Unlike conventional dentures, one thing that makes fixed dentures stand out is that they are a permanent option. Conventional dentures are not permanent, and in addition to needing relining after a few years, they also need to be fully replaced after seven to ten years. Fixed dentures, on the other hand, will last you your entire life if you take good care of them.

Conventional dentures can also cause embarrassing popping and slippage when in your mouth. Fixed dentures will stay in place. Conventional dentures can make it hard to enjoy your favorite foods due to how easily they are dislodged, but fixed dentures will not pop out when you bite into an apple or a carrot.

Conventional dentures do not preserve your gum tissue, either. Over time, your gums will start to shrink and recede. Fixed dentures can help prevent this from occurring. They also have the added advantage of preventing loss of bone mass in your mouth, helping keep your mouth healthier and stronger.

While nobody wants to admit to being a little bit vain, the reality is that conventional dentures can take a toll on your appearance by making you look prematurely aged. When your gums and bone start to shrink, your face and cheeks can start to take on a shrunken and sagging appearance. Fixed dentures can help keep your face looking full and attractive, preventing that hollow appearance that often accompanies dentures.

The Process

The surgery with fixed dentures is minimal, too. Unlike conventional dental implants, which require each prosthesis to be placed one at a time, fixed dentures require just a few posts surgically placed into your jawbone. For many of our patients, they can have a full arch of teeth in just one appointment! This is the perfect middle ground for people who may be hesitant about either conventional dentures or implants.
